Today, I've been working on a couple bigger paintings, so I painted this itty bitty so I could have a finished painting to show you. Don't get me wrong, this itty bitty took quite a bit of time to do. Smaller canvas, smaller brushes, still takes some time. Another unusual for me, this painting was 3/4's of the way painted by looking at it as a vertical rather than a horizontal. A little exercise for my head... that was fun. The grassy part was on the right most of the time I was painting this.
Safflower oil... I looked in "The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques" 5th edition, revised and updated 1991... even though the whites are whiter with safflower oil, ..."it is a fair replacement for linseed oil in artists' colors but its resistance to age --embrittlement-- is not expected to equal that of linseed oil."
The book did not say how long, but that must be the reason we see linseed oil being used/sold in art supply houses, rather than safflower oil. Now, what is used in the medium for aqua oils?

I love this. I like the little buildings. It reminds me of growing up in New York and seeing overgrown grass and weeds on abandoned lots.

Hi Tammy, the small pieces are attached with straight pins onto a fabric covered piece of foam insulation that I purchased from Lowe's. Like a big hardware store/lumber yard... Mynard's is like it.
I will do a detail of how I made this board. I've had several inquiries about it and a couple of my Stutz artist buddies also used the idea. Works great and it's light weight!
